Why is a PRT or FJI performed?

Treatment of an irritated nerve root

Periradicular therapy (PRT) is used for local treatment of pain stemming from a nerve-root irritation in the spine (radicular pain). Such nerve-root irritations are mostly due to a herniated disc, or bone-based constrictions compressing the nerve roots.

It is typical that the source of pain and pain response are mutually reinforcing with radicular pain. For example, if the nerve root is inflamed, certain endogenous substances are released which cause new pain. Therefore, the nerve swells and the pressure of the surrounding tissue on the nerve increases.

Targeted treatment is possible

In order to break the pain cycle, the therapy must apply its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory action exactly at the point where the pain is triggered. For this reason PRT and FJI provide effective therapy, since they facilitate pinpoint treatment precision of spinal diseases, without the need for an operation.
